You’ve just booked the perfect family vacation, but the thought of traveling with your toddler is enough to make you want to book a staycation instead. Don’t panic! With these 10 tips, you can enjoy a stress-free adventure with your little one and make unforgettable memories.
- 1. Plan ahead: Flying with a toddler takes a little extra planning. Choose flights that coincide with nap times or book a red-eye so your little one can sleep through most of the flight. Whenever possible and if in your budget get your kid their own seat this would be my first recommendation from the 16 month mark or so.
- 2. Pack smart: Make a list of the items you need for your trip, including diapers, snacks, and entertainment options. Don’t forget to bring a few of your child’s favorite toys to keep them comforted during moments of possible stress. I also recommend hiding the favorite toy a few days before the flight this will make it extra special when they get it back on the flight and it will hold there attention for longer.
- 3. Bring a car seat: A car seat is essential for traveling with a toddler to ensure their safety while riding in a car rental or taxi. Lots of great options these day for every price range. From the Way-B Pico to your average Cosco seat, car seats are a must and can double as a stroller if you use one of these wheeled carts. If a car seat if out of the question but the child has their own seat and of course dependent on the airline rules there is this FAA approved CARES harness.
- 4. Prepare for tantrums: Tantrums are inevitable when traveling with toddlers. Bring some soothing toys or favorite activities to distract them and prevent boredom. In out case we have a blankie that the baby uses to soothe herself keep that handy and have a spare.
- 5. Dress your toddler in comfortable clothes: Opt for comfortable clothes and layers for your little one during travel, to keep them cozy and comfy. Don’t forget to pack a light but warm jacket always essential for the airplane.
- 6. Allergy planning: For kids with food allergies, bring your own snacks and meal options to ensure they are not exposed to any food-related reactions. Even if there are no allergy concerns a good snack box with lots of variety will save you having to rely on the airline to have something adequate or worse pay the horrific airport prices for snacks.
- 7. Early bird gets the worm: Arrive at the airport or train station at least an hour earlier to give ample time for check-in, security, and any unexpected delays. My most recent examples are the most untimely diaper blowout and the newly potty trained accident.
- 8. Plan for Entertainment: Bring along books, puzzles, coloring books, tablets, and a variety of age-appropriate games to keep your little one entertained while on the go. Revert back to item one: toy are important and if you are allowing them this is an excellent time to break your own rules on screen time. Download some educational shows so you feel less guilty. I also recommend investing in some toddler earphones. While Ms. Rachel is music to my ears other adults may not take too kindly to hours of it on repeat. For the comfort of all those involve please make sure the toys are quiet. Thank me later. (The suction toys are a favorite for endless fun onboard for almost any toddler age.)
- 9. Travel Stroller: Do yourself a favor and get a stroller that is accepted onboard the airplane. You would think it would be impossible to lose a gate checked stroller but it happened to us on our trip to London (looking at you Etihad). It took 2 days to get it back. There are so many options nowadays for every price point. Some of these like the GB pockit+ even fold up small enough to fit in a regular backpack.
- 10. Have Patience: Finally, don’t forget to bring your patience! This is a new experience for your toddler and may take a bit of adaptation. After all, travel with toddlers requires some flexibility and willingness to go with the flow, lots of love and PATIENCE. Trust the process the more they do it the better they will be at it.
Traveling with toddlers can be an enjoyable experience for everyone involved if you take the necessary steps to prepare. With these tips, you’ll be well-prepared for a stress-free travel adventure with your little one. So, pack your bags, grab your loved ones, and hit the open road because the world is waiting for your next adventure.
